Chin Filler in Istanbul: Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation

chin filler istanbul

The chin is one of the most underestimated features of the face. When we think about facial beauty, we usually think of the eyes, lips or nose, yet the chin quietly defines the balance of the whole face. A well-projected chin makes the nose look smaller, the jawline sharper and the profile more harmonious. A small or retruded chin, on the other hand, can make the face look unbalanced and the neck less defined.

Chin filler is a non-surgical way to improve the shape and projection of the chin in a single short session. I am Op. Dr. Akın Şahin, a European Board certified facial plastic surgeon in Istanbul. Because I also perform chin implant surgery, I can advise you honestly on whether filler or surgery is the better choice for your face. In this guide, I explain everything you need to know about chin filler: the products used, who it suits, how it is done and what to expect.

What Is Chin Filler?

Chin filler, also called non-surgical chin augmentation, is the injection of a dense filler onto the chin bone to increase its projection, length or width. The filler acts like a soft, temporary implant. It can bring a receding chin forward, lengthen a short chin, correct asymmetry and smooth a dimpled or “orange-peel” chin.

The procedure takes about 20–40 minutes, requires no incisions and no general anaesthesia, and you can return to your normal activities the same day.

The Aesthetic Importance of the Chin

Facial harmony depends on proportions. The chin is the anchor of the lower face: it frames the lips, supports the jawline and balances the nose in profile. A weak chin can make the nose appear larger, the lips seem too prominent and the neck look fuller. Even a small change of a few millimetres in chin projection can transform the profile.

Types of Fillers Used for the Chin

The chin requires a filler with very different properties from the lips. Because it must imitate bone, the product needs to be firm, cohesive and able to lift the tissue.

A. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers

Hyaluronic acid fillers developed for the chin and jawline are much denser and more cross-linked than lip fillers. They have a high “lifting capacity” (G-prime), which allows them to create definition and projection. Their main advantages are that they look natural, are well tolerated and can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed. For most of my patients, a high-density HA filler is my first choice.

B. Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

Calcium hydroxylapatite contains minerals similar to those found in bone and teeth. As well as adding volume, it stimulates the body to produce its own collagen. It can last longer than HA fillers, but it cannot be dissolved with an enzyme, so it should only be used by experienced injectors in carefully selected patients.

C. Polycaprolactone (PCL) and Other Biostimulators

PCL-based fillers are designed for long-lasting results of up to 2–4 years. Like CaHA, they cannot be dissolved, so I use them selectively. For first-time patients, I almost always recommend starting with hyaluronic acid.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Chin Filler?

Genetic and Structural Reasons

Some people are born with a small or retruded chin (microgenia). This is often noticed in profile photos and may make the nose look larger. Chin filler is an excellent way to correct mild to moderate chin deficiency without surgery.

Age-Related Changes

With age, the bone of the lower jaw slowly loses volume, and the soft tissues of the chin descend. The chin may look flatter, shorter or wrinkled, and lines may appear between the chin and the lower lip. Chin filler restores structural support and refreshes the lower face.

Aesthetic and Masculinisation Goals

Many men want a stronger, wider and more square chin as part of a masculine facial profile. Many women want a slightly more projected, softly pointed chin that creates a feminine V-shaped face. Chin filler can achieve both, depending on where and how it is placed.

Chin filler may not be the best option if your chin is severely retruded, if you have a significant bite problem, or if you would like a permanent result. In these cases, a chin implant or orthognathic surgery may be more appropriate. I compare the options in detail in my article chin filler vs chin implant.

The Difference Between Chin Filler and Jawline Filler

Chin filler and jawline filler are often performed together, but they treat different areas.

  • Chin filler focuses on the front of the lower face. It improves projection, length and the shape of the chin tip.
  • Jawline filler focuses on the line from the chin to the angle of the jaw below the ear. It sharpens the contour of the lower face and separates the face from the neck.

For many patients, especially men, combining both treatments gives the most balanced result. You can learn more on my jawline filler page.

Chin Aesthetics in Men and Women: Anatomical Differences

The Ideal Female Chin

In women, a very wide or square chin is usually not desirable. The ideal female chin is slightly narrower, softly projected and gently pointed. It should create a smooth transition into a slim jawline and a delicate, heart-shaped or oval face. Chin filler in women is therefore placed mainly at the centre of the chin to add projection without widening it.

The Ideal Male Chin

In men, a stronger, wider and more square chin is associated with masculinity. The ideal male profile has a well-defined mandible with a straight, sharp line from the chin to the angle of the jaw. In men, filler is placed to increase both projection and width, often together with jawline filler.

Detailed Facial Analysis: Proportions and the Ricketts Line

Before treatment, I perform a detailed facial analysis. Two principles are especially helpful:

  • The facial thirds: The face can be divided into three equal parts: from the hairline to the eyebrows, from the eyebrows to the base of the nose, and from the base of the nose to the bottom of the chin. A short lower third often benefits from chin lengthening.
  • The Ricketts line (E-line): In profile, an imaginary line is drawn from the tip of the nose to the tip of the chin. Ideally, the lips sit slightly behind this line. If the lips protrude far beyond it, the chin is often too far back.

This analysis allows me to plan exactly where filler should go and how much is needed. Most patients need 1–3 ml of filler for the chin.

Your Consultation: What to Expect

Your first visit is a conversation, not a sales appointment. I ask what bothers you about your chin or profile and look at photos you may have brought to show the look you like. I then examine your face from the front, from both sides and from below, and assess your skin quality, bite and the relationship between your chin, lips and nose.

Many patients who come for chin filler are surprised to learn that their concern is actually related to another area, such as a short lower face, a prominent nose or a fuller neck. My aim is to explain clearly what chin filler can and cannot achieve, so you can make an informed decision. If filler is right for you, treatment can usually be performed on the same day.

Preparing for Chin Filler

A little preparation helps reduce bruising and swelling:

  • Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E and ginkgo for about one week before treatment, unless these have been prescribed by your doctor.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment.
  • Do not schedule dental treatment in the two weeks before or after your filler.
  • Come with a clean face, without make-up on the lower face.
  • If you have had filler or a chin implant before, please tell me what was used and when.

The Chin Filler Procedure

The procedure is carried out in the clinic and usually takes 20–40 minutes.

Step 1: Cleansing and Marking

The skin is thoroughly disinfected. I then mark the key points on the chin according to your facial analysis and the result we have planned.

Step 2: Anaesthesia

A numbing cream or a small local anaesthetic injection is used. Chin fillers also contain lidocaine, so the treatment is comfortable.

Step 3: Injection Technique

Chin filler is placed deep, directly on the bone, where it provides the best structural support. I use a fine needle for precise deep placement and a blunt cannula for shaping and smoothing. Cannulas reduce the risk of bruising and vascular injury. After injection, the filler is gently moulded to ensure a smooth, even contour.

You will see the result immediately in the mirror. We then review the result together and, if needed, make small adjustments.

What Affects How Long Chin Filler Lasts?

The longevity of chin filler depends on several factors:

  • Type of product: HA fillers usually last 12–18 months; CaHA fillers can last 18–24 months.
  • Area and movement: The chin moves less than the lips, so fillers last longer here.
  • Metabolism: People with a fast metabolism or who exercise intensively may break down filler more quickly.
  • Lifestyle: Smoking and heavy sun exposure can shorten the effect.
  • Amount and technique: Deep placement on the bone usually gives a longer-lasting result.

Recovery After Chin Filler

The First 24 Hours

Do not touch or press on your chin. Avoid make-up, strenuous exercise and alcohol. Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised.

The First Week

Avoid saunas, hammams, sunbathing and very hot showers for the first three days. Mild swelling and tenderness are normal and settle over a few days. Avoid dental treatments and facial massages for two weeks.

Does Chin Filler Have Side Effects?

As with any injection, some temporary side effects can occur:

  • Swelling: The chin may look larger than planned for the first 2–3 days.
  • Bruising: Small bruises may appear at injection points and fade within 5–7 days.
  • Tenderness: The area may feel slightly sore, especially when chewing.
  • Lumps or irregularities: These are uncommon and can usually be smoothed or dissolved.
  • Tyndall effect: If filler is placed too superficially, a bluish tint may appear. Correct deep placement prevents this.

Serious complications such as vascular occlusion are rare, but they are the reason chin filler should only be performed by a doctor with detailed knowledge of facial anatomy.

Can Chin Filler Reduce a Double Chin?

Chin filler cannot remove fat. However, bringing a retruded chin forward tightens the skin under the chin and improves the angle between the chin and the neck. In many patients, this makes a mild double chin appear smaller. If you have a significant amount of fat under the chin, I may recommend Endolift for double chin or surgical double chin removal, sometimes combined with chin filler.

Treatments That Can Be Combined With Chin Filler

  • Jawline filler: For a complete, defined lower face.
  • [Lip fillers](https://drakinsahin.com/en/lip-fillers/): To balance the lips with the new chin projection.
  • [Non-surgical rhinoplasty](https://drakinsahin.com/en/non-surgical-rhinoplasty/): Chin and nose together create a harmonious profile (“profiloplasty”).
  • [Anti-wrinkle injections](https://drakinsahin.com/en/anti-wrinkle-injections/): Relaxing an overactive chin muscle smooths a dimpled chin and helps filler last longer.

Common Myths About Chin Filler

  • Myth: “Chin filler always looks fake.” Fact: Natural results depend on correct product choice, deep placement and respect for facial proportions.
  • Myth: “The chin will sag when the filler dissolves.” Fact: When filler breaks down, the chin returns to its previous shape. It does not become worse than before.
  • Myth: “Only women have chin filler.” Fact: Chin and jawline enhancement is one of the most popular treatments among men.
  • Myth: “Chin filler is the same as a chin implant.” Fact: Filler is temporary and adjustable; an implant is permanent and requires surgery.

What Is a “Texas Jawline”?

“Texas jawline” is a popular term for a very strong, wide and angular lower face, created with chin and jawline fillers. It usually requires a larger volume of filler and is mainly requested by men. While it can look striking, it must be adapted to your facial structure. I always prioritise a result that looks strong and natural rather than artificial.

Can Chin Filler Lengthen the Chin?

Yes. In people with a short lower face, filler placed at the bottom of the chin can lengthen it vertically by a few millimetres. This improves the proportions of the face, makes the face look slimmer and balances the lips and nose.

Chin Tip Filler for Sharper Facial Contours

A small amount of filler placed precisely at the tip of the chin can create a more defined, slightly pointed chin. This is one of the most effective ways to achieve a V-shaped, feminine face, especially when combined with a slim jawline.

Chin Filler for a Dimpled or “Orange-Peel” Chin

Some people notice that their chin looks bumpy or dimpled, especially when they speak or close their lips. This is caused by an overactive mentalis muscle, often combined with thin soft tissue over the chin bone. The appearance is sometimes called an “orange-peel” or “golf-ball” chin.

The best treatment is usually a combination: a small dose of anti-wrinkle injection relaxes the mentalis muscle, and a small amount of filler restores a smooth surface. Relaxing the muscle also helps the filler last longer, because there is less movement pressing on it. Most patients see a smooth, calm chin within two weeks.

Why Choose a Facial Plastic Surgeon for Chin Filler?

The chin may seem like a simple area to inject, but it contains important blood vessels and nerves, and the correct depth of injection is essential for both safety and a natural result. As a facial plastic surgeon, I perform chin implant surgery and facial surgery regularly, so I know the anatomy of this area in three dimensions.

This experience also helps me make an honest recommendation. Some patients would benefit more from a chin implant, a neck procedure or simply a smaller amount of filler. My priority is a balanced face, not the largest possible chin.

Chin Filler for Patients From Abroad

Many of my chin filler patients travel to Istanbul from the UK, Europe and other countries. Because the procedure is quick and has no downtime, it fits easily into a short trip. You can send me front and profile photos before you travel, so we can discuss whether chin filler is suitable and approximately how much filler you will need.

I recommend planning at least one night in Istanbul after treatment, so I can check your result the following day if needed. You can fly the next day. Your result settles fully over two weeks, and I remain available for any questions by WhatsApp after you return home.

Chin Filler Before and After

The difference between before and after chin filler is often most visible in profile. A receding chin moves forward, the lips appear more balanced, the nose looks smaller and the neckline looks sharper. You can see examples of my work in the gallery.

Is Chin Filler Permanent?

No. Chin filler is temporary. Hyaluronic acid fillers usually last 12–18 months, and biostimulating fillers up to 2 years. Many patients choose to maintain their result with smaller top-ups. If you would like a permanent solution, a chin implant may be more suitable. You can find information on my chin implant cost in Turkey page.

Chin Filler or Chin Implant: Which Is Right for You?

Both chin filler and a chin implant increase chin projection, but they suit different patients.

Chin filler is the right choice if you:

  • Would like a mild to moderate improvement
  • Prefer to avoid surgery and downtime
  • Want to “test” how a stronger chin looks before considering a permanent option
  • Would like a result that can be adjusted or reversed

A chin implant may be the better choice if you:

  • Have a significantly retruded chin that would need a large amount of filler
  • Want a permanent result without regular top-ups
  • Are planning other facial surgery, such as rhinoplasty or neck liposuction, at the same time

Because I perform both treatments, I can recommend the option that is genuinely best for your face. In some patients, a trial with filler helps them decide confidently on an implant later.

Who Should Not Have Chin Filler?

Chin filler is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in the presence of skin infection, acne flare-ups or cold sores near the treatment area, or in people with known allergies to filler components. It should be postponed if you have recently had dental surgery or have active gum infection. If you have an autoimmune disease or take blood-thinning medication, we will discuss this carefully during your consultation.

Is There an Age Limit for Chin Filler?

Chin filler is performed on adults over 18. Younger patients usually want to correct a genetically small chin, while older patients want to restore volume lost with age. There is no upper age limit as long as you are in good health.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does the chin filler procedure take?

The procedure usually takes 20–40 minutes, including planning and numbing.

Is chin filler painful?

Most patients feel only mild pressure. Numbing and the anaesthetic contained in the filler make it very comfortable.

When can I return to daily life?

Immediately. Most patients return to work the same day.

Will it look natural?

Yes. With careful planning and deep placement, chin filler looks and feels natural.

Can chin filler be reversed?

Hyaluronic acid chin filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if necessary.

When does chin filler settle?

The filler settles within about two weeks, when swelling has completely subsided.

Can I have chin filler while wearing braces?

Yes, in most cases. Braces do not prevent chin filler, but I recommend discussing timing with your orthodontist, as tooth movement can change the profile.

Does my chin go back to its old shape when the filler dissolves?

Yes. The chin gradually returns to how it was before treatment. It does not become worse.

How much filler does the chin need?

Most patients need 1–3 ml. Men who want a wider, stronger chin, or patients combining chin and jawline treatment, may need more.

Can I fly after chin filler Istanbul?

Yes. You can usually fly the next day. If you are travelling from abroad, I recommend staying in Istanbul for at least one night so I can check your result.

How much does chin filler cost?

The cost depends on the amount of filler needed. Detailed information is available on my jawline and chin filler cost in Turkey page.
