Lip Fillers in Istanbul: Natural Lip Augmentation
Full, well-shaped lips are a sign of youth and play an important role in facial harmony. Some people are born with thin lips; others notice that their lips lose volume and definition with age. Lip fillers are a quick, non-surgical way to restore volume, improve shape and correct asymmetry while keeping a natural look.
I am Op. Dr. Akın Şahin, a facial plastic surgeon in Istanbul. I believe the best lip augmentation is the one nobody notices as “done”. In this guide, I explain how lip fillers work, who they are suitable for and how to care for your lips after treatment.
Who Can Have Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are suitable for most healthy adults who would like fuller or better-defined lips. Typical reasons include:
- Naturally thin upper or lower lips
- Loss of lip volume with age
- Asymmetry between the two sides of the lips
- An undefined lip border (vermilion border)
- Fine vertical lines around the mouth, often called “smoker’s lines”
- Downturned corners of the mouth
Before treatment, we discuss your expectations in detail. I look at the proportions between your upper and lower lip, your teeth, your smile and the rest of your face, so that the result suits you.
How Are Lip Fillers Performed?
Lip fillers are performed with a hyaluronic acid filler designed specifically for the lips. These fillers are soft and flexible, so the lips move naturally when you speak and smile.
The procedure follows a few simple steps:
- Consultation and planning: We decide together on the shape and amount of volume you would like.
- Numbing: A numbing cream is applied for 15–20 minutes. The filler itself also contains a local anaesthetic.
- Injection: I inject small amounts of filler into precise points of the lips with a fine needle or a cannula.
- Shaping: The filler is gently moulded to achieve a smooth and even result.
The injection itself usually takes 10–15 minutes. For a natural result, I usually use 0.5–1 ml of filler in one session. If you would like more volume, it is better to add it gradually at a second visit.
Which Areas of the Lips Can Be Treated?
Lip Volume
Volume can be added to the upper lip, the lower lip or both. In balanced lips, the lower lip is usually slightly fuller than the upper lip.
Lip Border Definition
Injecting along the lip border gives a crisp, defined outline and helps prevent lipstick from bleeding into fine lines.
Cupid’s Bow and Philtrum
Subtle shaping of the Cupid’s bow and the philtral columns (the two ridges above the upper lip) creates a more youthful and attractive upper lip.
Corners of the Mouth
Small amounts of filler can lift downturned mouth corners and soften a sad or tired expression.
How Much Lip Filler Do I Need?
The amount of filler depends on your starting point and the result you want. As a general guide:
- 5 ml: A subtle refresh, ideal for first-time patients or for defining the lip border.
- 1 ml: A noticeable but natural increase in volume for most lips.
- More than 1 ml: Usually best added in stages, a few weeks apart, so the tissues can adapt and the result stays natural.
Adding filler gradually is safer and gives a softer, more natural-looking result than injecting a large amount at once. Very thin lips may need two or three sessions to reach the desired volume.
Lip Filler Techniques
There is no single technique that suits everyone. I choose the technique according to your lip anatomy and goals:
- Classic volumising technique: Filler is placed evenly in the body of the lips to increase overall volume.
- Border (contour) technique: A fine line of filler along the lip border creates definition and a crisp outline.
- Russian lips technique: Filler is injected vertically from the border towards the centre of the lip to lift the upper lip and create a heart-shaped look.
- Hydration technique: Very small amounts of a soft filler improve lip texture and hydration without adding much volume.
Often, a combination of techniques gives the most balanced result.
Choosing the Right Lip Filler Product
Not all fillers are suitable for the lips. Lip fillers must be soft, smooth and flexible, so that the lips feel natural and move freely when you speak, eat and smile. A filler that is too firm can make the lips look stiff or create visible lumps, while a filler that absorbs too much water can cause the lips to look swollen and puffy.
I use only original, certified hyaluronic acid fillers from established manufacturers, designed specifically for lip treatment. I choose the product according to your lip anatomy: some products are better for adding volume, while others are better for defining the border or improving hydration. Every product is opened in front of you, and its batch number is recorded in your file. Using high-quality products is one of the most important factors for a safe, natural and long-lasting result.
Lip Fillers for Men
More men are now asking for lip treatments. In men, the aim is usually not fullness but subtle restoration of lost volume, improved definition and correction of asymmetry. I use smaller amounts and avoid accentuating the Cupid’s bow, so the lips remain masculine and natural.
Who Are Lip Fillers Suitable For?
You may be a good candidate for lip fillers if you:
- Are in good general health
- Have realistic expectations and want a natural improvement
- Have no active cold sores or infection on the lips
- Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
If you have a history of cold sores (herpes), let me know before treatment, as preventive medication may be recommended. If your main concern is a long upper lip that shows little of your upper teeth, a surgical lip lift may be a better option. I explain the differences in my article lip filler vs lip lift.
Aftercare After Lip Fillers
To help your lips heal and your result last longer:
- Do not touch or press on your lips for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid saunas, hammams, steam rooms and very hot showers for 48 hours.
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.
- Do not wear lipstick or lip make-up for 12–24 hours.
- Avoid kissing and drinking through a straw on the first day.
- Choose soft foods for the first day if your lips feel tender.
- Drink plenty of water and use a gentle lip balm.
What Is Normal After Lip Fillers?
The lips are a very sensitive area, so some swelling is expected. Swelling is usually most noticeable on the first and second day and settles within 3–5 days. Small bruises may appear and fade within a week. The lips may also feel slightly firm or uneven at first; this improves as the filler settles. I explain day-by-day what to expect in my article on lip filler swelling and aftercare.
Contact me immediately if you notice severe pain, whitening or dark discolouration of the skin, or blisters, as these may require urgent treatment.
Who Should Not Have Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are not recommended for:
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- People with an active cold sore or infection on or around the lips
- People with a known allergy to hyaluronic acid fillers or lidocaine
- People with certain uncontrolled autoimmune diseases
- People who recently had dental treatment or plan dental work within two weeks
How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?
Lip fillers usually last 6–12 months. The lips move constantly when we speak, eat and smile, so fillers break down here faster than in other areas. Longevity also depends on the product used, your metabolism and lifestyle. Many patients find that, after a few treatments, they need smaller top-ups to maintain their result.
Because hyaluronic acid can be dissolved, lip fillers are reversible. If you are unhappy with old filler placed elsewhere, it can often be dissolved before a new, more natural treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do lip fillers hurt?
The lips are sensitive, but numbing cream and the anaesthetic contained in the filler make the procedure very tolerable. Most patients describe it as mild discomfort.
Will my lips look natural?
Yes. I use soft fillers, conservative amounts and careful technique. My goal is lips that suit your face and move naturally.
What are “Russian lips”?
Russian lips is a technique that lifts the centre of the upper lip vertically, creating a heart-shaped, doll-like look. It can suit some faces, but I always adapt the technique to your natural anatomy.
How much do lip fillers cost?
The cost depends on the amount of filler needed. You can find detailed information on my lip filler cost in Turkey page.
Can I have lip fillers before travelling home?
Yes. You can usually fly the next day after lip fillers Istanbul. I recommend planning treatment at least two weeks before an important event, so any swelling has fully settled.
How do I book a consultation?
You can contact my clinic by WhatsApp or phone. If you are abroad, you can send photos of your lips for a preliminary assessment.
