Lip Filler Swelling Day by Day: Aftercare and What to Expect
Lip Filler Swelling Day by Day: Aftercare and What to Expect
The most common message I receive the day after a lip filler treatment is: “Are my lips supposed to look this big?” The answer is almost always yes. Lip filler swelling is normal and temporary, and knowing what to expect makes the first few days much easier. Here is the timeline I share with my patients in Istanbul.
Right after treatment
Immediately after your lip filler injection, your lips will look fuller than the final result. They may be slightly red, tender and show small injection marks. You may also notice minor unevenness, because swelling is rarely perfectly symmetrical. All of this is expected.
What to do:
• Apply a cold compress wrapped in a cloth for 5–10 minutes at a time
• Avoid touching or pressing your lips
• Drink cool water; avoid hot drinks and straws for the rest of the day
• Don’t wear lipstick for the first 24 hours
Day 1–2: Peak swelling
Lip filler swelling usually peaks between 24 and 48 hours. The lips can feel tight and look larger than planned, and swelling is often more noticeable in the morning. Small bruises may appear around the injection points.
What to do:
• Sleep on your back with your head slightly raised
• Avoid alcohol, intense exercise, saunas and hot baths
• Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin, which can increase bruising; paracetamol is fine
• Avoid kissing and dental treatments for the first days
Day 3–5: Swelling settles
By day 3, most swelling has gone down noticeably. The lips start to look more like the planned result, though they may still feel slightly firm. Small lumps you can feel, but not see, are common at this stage and usually soften on their own.
Most international patients fly home the day after treatment. Flying does not affect the result.
Day 7: Almost there
After one week, the lips look close to the final result. Any bruising has usually faded or can be covered with make-up. You can return to all normal activities, including exercise.
Week 2: Final result
At around two weeks, the filler has fully integrated with the tissue and the swelling has gone. This is the right time to judge your lip filler results. If a small touch-up is needed, this is when I do it, not before.
Is my swelling normal?
Normal:
• Swelling that peaks in the first 48 hours and then improves
• Mild unevenness during the first days
• Small bruises
• Small lumps you can feel but not see
Contact your doctor immediately if you notice:
• Severe or increasing pain
• White, grey or blue discolouration of the lips or skin around them
• Blisters or skin changes near the treated area
• Swelling that keeps getting worse after day 3
These signs are rare but must be checked right away, as they can indicate a problem with blood flow. My patients can reach me directly on WhatsApp after they go home.
Tips for less swelling next time
• Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning supplements, such as fish oil and vitamin E, for a few days before treatment
• Schedule your treatment at least two weeks before an important event
• Tell your doctor if you bruise easily
