Facelift Recovery in Istanbul: How Long to Stay and When to Fly Home
If you are travelling to Istanbul for a facelift, planning your recovery is as important as planning your surgery. How many days should you stay? When can you fly? When will you look presentable? In this article, I explain the facelift recovery process week by week, with practical advice for international patients.
How Long Should You Stay in Istanbul After a Facelift?
I recommend that most patients plan to stay in Istanbul for 7–10 days. A typical schedule looks like this:
- Day 0: Arrival in Istanbul, transfer to your hotel.
- Day 1: Consultation, examination, photos and pre-operative tests.
- Day 2: Surgery and one night in hospital.
- Day 3: Dressing change and discharge to your hotel.
- Days 4–6: Rest at the hotel, with check-ups as needed.
- Days 7–9: Stitch removal and final check.
- Day 9–10: Flight home.
If you are having a mini facelift, a slightly shorter stay may be possible. If you are combining your facelift with other procedures, such as eyelid surgery, you may need a few extra days. Your exact plan is confirmed during your assessment.
When Can You Fly After a Facelift?
Most patients can fly home 7–10 days after surgery, once their stitches have been removed and I have checked their healing. Flying earlier is not recommended, because swelling is at its peak in the first days, and a haematoma (collection of blood under the skin), although uncommon, is most likely to appear early.
Tips for a comfortable flight:
- Book an aisle seat so you can move easily.
- Walk in the aisle regularly and drink plenty of water.
- Avoid alcohol.
- Wear comfortable clothing that opens at the front, so you do not pull it over your head.
- Keep your medication and aftercare instructions in your hand luggage.
- Consider wearing a light scarf or hat to cover remaining bruising.
Facelift Recovery Week by Week
Days 1–3
The first days are the most uncomfortable. Your face and neck will feel tight and swollen, and bruising may appear, especially around the jaw and neck. Pain is usually mild to moderate and well controlled with medication. Drains, if used, are removed within 24–48 hours. Keep your head elevated, rest and take short walks around your room.
Days 4–7
Swelling and bruising begin to decrease. Bruises change colour from blue-purple to yellow-green. You may feel numbness around the cheeks and ears, which is normal. Most patients can walk around the hotel and nearby area comfortably.
Week 2
Stitches have been removed and you are back home. Swelling continues to reduce. Many patients feel comfortable going out for short walks and seeing close friends. Light make-up can usually be used to cover remaining bruising.
Weeks 3–4
Most patients return to work and social life. Your face will still be slightly swollen, but usually not noticeably to others. Some tightness and numbness around the ears may persist.
Months 2–6
Residual swelling resolves gradually. Scars change from pink to pale and become finer. The final, natural result usually appears between three and six months.
What You Should Avoid During Recovery
- Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting: for 4–6 weeks
- Saunas, hammams and very hot showers: for at least 4 weeks
- Sun exposure: protect your scars and skin with sunscreen and a hat
- Hair dye: for at least 4–6 weeks
- Smoking: for at least 4 weeks after surgery, as it impairs healing
- Sleeping on your side or face: sleep on your back with your head elevated for 2–3 weeks
Tips for a Smooth Recovery
- Prepare a comfortable recovery space at your hotel and at home.
- Sleep with two or three pillows or a wedge pillow.
- Eat soft, healthy food and avoid salty meals that increase swelling.
- Use cold compresses as instructed in the first 48–72 hours.
- Take short walks several times a day to support circulation.
- Follow your medication schedule.
- Be patient. Many patients feel low or impatient in the first week, when swelling hides the result. This is normal and passes.
Aftercare After You Return Home
Your care does not end when you leave Istanbul. I stay in contact with my patients by WhatsApp, and I ask you to send photos at set intervals, so I can follow your healing. If you have any concern, such as increasing swelling on one side, fever or unusual pain, contact me immediately. Your local GP can also help with routine checks if needed.
When Will You See the Final Result?
You will notice a lifted jawline and neck as soon as the swelling starts to subside, usually by the second or third week. However, the final result takes three to six months, as the deep tissues settle and scars mature. I recommend waiting at least three months before judging your result.

Most patients return to desk work after 10–14 days, and to all activities after 4–6 weeks.
Will I need someone with me in Istanbul?
It is recommended to travel with a companion, especially for the first few days after surgery, although our team supports you throughout your stay.
When can I wear glasses after a facelift?
Glasses can usually be worn after a few days, but avoid pressing the arms of the glasses on the incisions behind the ears.
