Rhinoplasty Recovery Day by Day: When Can You Fly Home From Turkey?

If you are travelling to Istanbul for a nose job, planning your recovery is just as important as choosing your surgeon. How long should you stay? When can you fly? When can you go back to work? Below is the recovery timeline I share with my international patients, so you know exactly what to expect.

Day 0: Surgery Day

Rhinoplasty usually takes 2–3 hours under general anaesthesia. You wake up with a splint on the outside of your nose and, in many cases, soft silicone splints inside the nose that still allow you to breathe. Most patients stay one night in hospital or return to their hotel the same evening, depending on the case.

You’ll feel congested and tired, but pain is usually mild and well controlled with medication.

Days 1–3: The Hardest Days

Patients often ask: “What are the hardest days after rhinoplasty?” For most people, it’s days 2 and 3.

  • Swelling and bruising around the eyes peak
  • The nose feels blocked, so you breathe through your mouth
  • Sleep can be uncomfortable

What helps:

  • Sleep with your head raised on two pillows
  • Use cold compresses around the eyes, not on the nose
  • Drink plenty of water and use a humidifier or saline spray
  • Don’t blow your nose

Days 4–6: Turning the Corner

Bruising starts to fade from purple to yellow, and you feel much more like yourself. Many patients go for short walks around Istanbul. If you have internal splints, they are usually removed around day 5–7, and breathing improves immediately.

Days 6–7: Splint Removal

This is the day patients look forward to most. I remove the external splint and see your new nose for the first time together with you. It will still look swollen, especially at the tip, but the new shape is already visible. I’ll check your healing and give you aftercare instructions for home.

When Can You Fly Home?

Most international patients fly home after splint removal, around day 7–8. Flying is safe at this point. Keep your head upright, drink water, and use a saline spray during the flight to keep the nose moist.

I recommend planning 7 to 10 days in Istanbul for a primary rhinoplasty, and slightly longer for revision cases.

Week 2: Back to Work

Most bruising has gone by days 10–14. Many patients return to office work and social life around 10–14 days. Light make-up can cover any remaining yellowish marks.

  • Avoid sun exposure on your nose
  • Continue sleeping with your head raised
  • Avoid intense exercise

Weeks 3–6: Returning to Normal

  • Light exercise (walking, light cardio): from about week 3
  • Gym and running: from about week 4–6
  • Glasses: avoid resting them on your nose for 6 weeks; tape them to your forehead or use contact lenses
  • Swimming: after about 4 weeks
  • Contact sports: wait at least 3 months

Months 2–12: The Long Phase

Your nose will look good long before it’s finished. Swelling, especially in the tip, slowly settles over the following months. I explain this phase in detail in rhinoplasty swelling stages: a month-by-month guide.

What Not to Do After Rhinoplasty

  • Don’t blow your nose for 2 weeks
  • Don’t wear glasses on your nose for 6 weeks
  • Don’t smoke for at least 4 weeks
  • Don’t bend forward or lift heavy objects for 2–3 weeks
  • Don’t sunbathe for several months
  • Don’t take aspirin or ibuprofen unless your surgeon allows it
