Chin Liposuction Recovery Day by Day

Recovery from chin liposuction is usually easier than patients expect. Most people return to normal daily life within a week. Below is the timeline I share with my patients in Istanbul, so you can plan your trip and your time off work.

Day 0: Surgery day

The procedure takes about 45–60 minutes and is usually done under local anaesthesia. Afterwards I put on a compression chin strap, which helps the skin settle and reduces swelling. You return to your hotel the same day.

You may feel tightness and mild soreness under the chin. Simple painkillers are usually enough.

Days 1–3: Peak swelling

Swelling and some bruising under the jaw are normal and usually peak in the first 2–3 days. During this time:

•      Wear the chin strap day and night, except when washing

•      Sleep with your head raised on two pillows

•      Avoid bending forward and lifting heavy things

•      Drink plenty of water and eat soft food if chewing feels tight

I see you for a check-up during these first days before you travel.

Days 3–4: Flying home

Most patients fly home around day 3 or 4, after their check-up. Wear your chin strap on the plane, drink water and walk in the aisle when you can. A scarf or a high collar easily covers the strap.

If you’re planning your trip, I recommend booking 4 days in Istanbul in total.

Week 1: Back to work

Most bruising fades within 7–10 days. Many patients go back to office work after 5–7 days. You can usually stop wearing the strap during the day after the first week and keep wearing it at night for one more week, unless I advise otherwise.

Weeks 2–4: Shape starts to show

As swelling goes down, the jawline becomes sharper. The area may feel firm or slightly numb; this is normal and improves gradually. Light exercise such as walking is fine. I usually allow the gym and sport after about 3 weeks.

Months 3–6: Final result

The final shape appears once all swelling has gone, usually between 3 and 6 months. The removed fat cells do not come back, so the result is long-lasting as long as your weight stays stable.

When should you contact me?

Contact me straight away if you notice swelling that gets worse on one side, increasing pain, redness, warmth or fever. These are uncommon, but should be checked early. My patients can reach me on WhatsApp after they go home.
