How Long Does Botox Last? And How to Make It Last Longer

“How long will it last?” is the question I hear most from patients considering botox for the first time. The short answer is 3 to 4 months for wrinkles. But the real answer depends on where you are treated, how strong your muscles are and how you look after your results. In this guide, I explain what to expect and how to make your botox last as long as possible.

The Botox Timeline: From Day 1 to Month 4

  • Day 0: Small bumps at the injection points that disappear within 30 minutes.
  • Days 3–5: The muscles begin to relax and lines start to soften.
  • Day 14: The full botox result is visible. This is the best time for a check-up and a small touch-up if needed.
  • Months 1–3: The result stays stable. Your forehead looks smooth and rested.
  • Months 3–4: Movement slowly returns and lines gradually reappear.

Botox doesn’t stop working suddenly. The effect fades gradually, so most patients book their next treatment when they first notice movement coming back.

How Long Botox Lasts in Each Area

  • Forehead lines: 3–4 months
  • Frown lines (11 lines): 3–4 months, sometimes longer
  • Crow’s feet: 3–4 months
  • Botox brow lift: 3–4 months
  • Masseter (jaw slimming): 4–6 months
  • Underarm sweating: 6–9 months, sometimes up to 12
  • Palm sweating: around 6 months

Sweating botox lasts longer because it affects the sweat glands rather than large muscles. You can read more in botox for excessive sweating: underarms and hands.

What Affects How Long Botox Lasts?

Dose

A dose that is too low wears off faster. Very low “budget” doses are a common reason why botox seems to last only a few weeks. The right dose depends on your muscle strength, not on a fixed price per area.

Muscle strength

Strong muscles break through botox sooner. This is why botox for men usually needs a higher dose.

Metabolism and exercise

People who exercise intensely or have a fast metabolism often find botox wears off faster.

Product quality

Original, properly stored products work as expected. Diluted or unregistered products may not.

Regular treatment

With regular treatments, many patients find their results last longer over time, because the muscles become slightly weaker and the skin is no longer creased every day.

7 Tips to Make Botox Last Longer

  1. Choose an experienced injector who doses according to your muscles.
  2. Follow the aftercare rules: stay upright for 4 hours and avoid exercise, saunas and alcohol for 24 hours.
  3. Use sunscreen every day. Sun damage speeds up skin aging and wrinkles.
  4. Don’t smoke. Smoking reduces collagen and deepens lines.
  5. Keep a regular schedule. Treating every 3–4 months maintains a smoother result.
  6. Look after your skin with good hydration and a retinoid if your doctor recommends one.
  7. Manage stress and sleep well. Frowning and squinting less helps your results last.

Does Botox Last Longer Over Time?

For many patients, yes. After several regular treatments, the treated muscles often become slightly weaker, and lines may form more slowly. Some patients can then increase the time between treatments to 5 or 6 months.

What Happens If I Stop Botox?

Nothing bad happens. Your muscles gradually return to normal and your lines return to how they were before treatment. They don’t become worse. In fact, the months of relaxation often mean your lines are softer than they would have been without botox.
